Winter storage and battery care for electric scooters – how to make your battery last for years

Sähköpotkulaudan talvisäilytys ja akun hoito – näin akku kestää vuosia

The battery of an electric scooter is the most expensive and delicate part of the device. With proper care, a lithium battery can easily last 3-5 years and maintain its range, whereas careless winter storage can destroy the battery in just one cold season. In this guide, we will go through exactly how to store your electric scooter in winter and keep the battery in good condition year-round.

Why battery care determines the lifespan of an electric scooter

Almost all electric scooters have a lithium-ion battery. It dislikes two things: severe cold and being left fully charged or completely empty for a long time. Once you understand these two basic principles, you have already significantly extended your battery's life.

Cold does not damage the battery instantly, but charging the battery in freezing temperatures can cause permanent damage. Therefore, winter storage and the correct charging routine are the most important individual factors affecting the scooter's lifespan.

Electric scooter winter storage step by step

1. Charge the battery to 40–60% before storage

Do not put the scooter away for winter fully charged or empty. The best storage level for a lithium battery is approximately half full (40–60%). At this level, the chemical stress on the battery is at its lowest during long periods of inactivity.

2. Store in a warm and dry place

The ideal storage temperature is +10…+20 °C. Avoid cold garages, storage sheds, or balconies. A dry indoor space, such as a hallway or a walk-in closet, is the best place. Moisture and frost are the battery's worst enemies.

3. Charge the battery once a month

A lithium battery slowly self-discharges even when not in use. Check the charge level about once a month and recharge it to approximately 50–60 percent. This prevents the battery from deep discharging, which is one of the most common reasons for premature battery failure.

4. Clean and protect before storage

Wipe the scooter clean, dry it thoroughly, and check the condition of the tires. If the tires are worn, winter is a good time to replace them. Check out our selection of tires and other spare parts, so your scooter will be ready to ride in spring.

Lithium battery care throughout the year

  • Do not keep the charger connected continuously. Disconnect the charger when the battery is full. Continuous trickle charging stresses the cells.
  • Avoid charging to 100% every time. If you don't need the full range, charge to 80–90 percent – this extends battery life.
  • Never run the battery completely empty. Charge at the latest when the charge is about 10–15%.
  • Use only the original or a compatible charger. The wrong voltage or current can damage the battery. You can find suitable chargers here.
  • Always charge in a warm place. If the scooter has been in the cold, allow it to warm up indoors before charging.

How to extend the range of your electric scooter

In addition to battery capacity, many everyday factors affect the range. You can extend the range by: keeping tire pressures correct, avoiding continuous full throttle, using gentle acceleration, and ensuring the scooter isn't carrying unnecessary extra weight. In cold weather, the range naturally shortens by 20–40%, which is completely normal – the capacity returns in warmer conditions.

When should the battery or charger be replaced?

A battery has reached the end of its life when its range has significantly dropped (for example, to less than half of new) and does not recover even in warm temperatures, or if the battery heats up, swells, or suddenly turns off. Do not continue to use a damaged battery. Do you need a new battery, charger, or other part? Frequently asked questions

Can an electric scooter be stored in a cold garage in winter?

Not recommended. Frost does not destroy the battery immediately, but cold storage and especially charging in freezing temperatures shorten battery life. It's better to store the scooter indoors at +10…+20 °C.

Should the battery be fully charged before winter storage?

No. The best storage level is about 40–60%. Recharge the battery to this level approximately once a month during storage.

Why is the range shorter in winter?

Cold slows down the battery's chemical reactions, temporarily reducing the available capacity. The range returns to normal when the battery warms up.

Can an electric scooter be ridden in winter?

Most models can withstand cold riding, but slipperiness, salt, and moisture increase risks. Ride carefully, maintain distance, and ensure you have safety equipment. Only charge the battery after the scooter has warmed up indoors.
